Help With IRS Letters and Notices

An IRS letter is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to act before the deadline. Our Enrolled Agents read the notice, pull your IRS transcripts, and send the right response for you.

What your IRS letter means

The notice number is printed in the top or bottom right corner. A CP2000 means the IRS matched your return against W-2s and 1099s and thinks income was left off — it is a proposal, not a bill, and many are reduced or eliminated with the right documents. A CP14 is a first balance-due notice. CP501 and CP503 are reminders. A CP504 means the IRS intends to levy, and an LT11 or Letter 1058 is the final notice before it can levy wages and bank accounts.

Why the deadline matters

Most IRS letters give 30 days to respond. Answer in time and you keep your options — disputing the change, setting up a payment plan, or requesting a Collection Due Process hearing. Miss it and the IRS can assess the tax and move to collection automatically. Send us the letter as soon as it arrives.

How we respond

With your signed power of attorney (Form 2848), we request your IRS transcripts, compare them to your records, and prepare a written response with supporting documents. If the IRS is right, we work out the best way to pay. If it is wrong, we prove it. Either way, the IRS talks to us, not you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a letter from the IRS a scam?

The IRS starts contact by mail, never by text, email or social media, and never demands gift cards or wire transfers. If you are unsure, send us the letter and we will verify it against your IRS account transcript.

How long do I have to respond to an IRS notice?

Usually 30 days from the date on the letter, but it varies — the deadline is printed on the notice. Contact us right away so there is time to respond properly.

Can you respond to the IRS for me?

Yes. As Enrolled Agents with your signed Form 2848, we can call and write to the IRS on your behalf.
